How to ask a friend how they're really doing
'How are you' is so worn out it barely registers. Below are openers that get a real answer.
The trick is being specific. 'How are you?' invites 'good'. 'How's your head been this week?' or 'how are things since [the thing]?' invites a real answer because it shows you remember.
Naming that you want the real answer also helps. 'No, like actually — how are you doing?' is a small but powerful question.

Hey — how have things been since [the thing they mentioned]? Been thinking about you.
How are you? And by that I mean: how are you actually, not the small-talk answer.
What's been on your mind lately?
No pressure to answer — but how are you really doing? Got time to listen if you want to talk.
How's your week been? On a scale of fine to actually-not-fine.

Common questions
What if they brush it off?
That's allowed. You opened the door — they may walk through it later. 'Cool — door's open whenever' is a good follow-up.
What if I don't have capacity to hear it all?
Be honest. 'I want to hear this properly — can we get on a call tomorrow when I can actually focus?' is more caring than half-listening now.
