How to message an old friend you haven't talked to in years
Reaching out after a long gap is easier when you skip the apology and just say something real.
The thing people overthink most about reconnecting is the silence itself — and almost no one on the receiving end cares as much as the sender thinks. A small, specific opener ('saw a thing that reminded me of you') almost always lands warmly.
Don't start with a five-paragraph apology. The message itself is the gesture. If they want to talk about why it's been so long, they will.

Hey! Saw something today that reminded me of you and realised it's been way too long. How are you?
Hey — random message but you've been on my mind lately and I wanted to say hi. How's life?
Hey! Was thinking about [thing you did together] the other day and it made me smile. Hope you're doing well 💛
Long time! Been thinking I should reach out for ages. How are things on your end?
Hey! I know it's been a minute — wanted to tell you something happened recently and you were one of the first people I thought to share it with. Got time to catch up?

Common questions
Should I apologize for the silence?
A quick 'been ages, sorry I disappeared' is fine, but don't dwell on it. The reach-out itself is the apology.
What if they don't reply?
Give it a week. If nothing, that's information — but plenty of people just miss messages. Try one more time, then let it go.
